The Brisbane Lions AFC has tonight sanctioned two of its players after they were charged with public nuisance by Queensland Police in Brisbane CBD on Friday night.

Sam Sheldon and Pearce Hanley have been handed financial sanctions for failing to meet the standards and expectations set by the Club when they failed to obey a police direction.

The sanctions were recommended by the Club’s Standards Committee at a meeting this evening that was also attended by both players.

The players showed genuine remorse at putting the Club in this position and expressed their disappointment at themselves for letting down not only the Club, but their teammates and staff, corporate partners, members and fans.

Sheldon and Hanley, who are currently on annual leave, will also face further internal sanctions when the Senior Leadership group returns for pre-season training in early November.

General Manager - Football Operations, Dean Warren, said that while the players’ behaviour was out of character, it was important that Club and community standards are upheld at all times.

“As a Club, we have high expectations when it comes to our culture and the behavioural standards of our players,” Warren said.

“While this incident was certainly out of character for both Sam and Pearce, both are fully aware of their obligations as Brisbane Lions players, which is why we have taken this action. Sam and Pearce accept and understand they made a poor decision on the night.”

The Club will not be offering further comment on this matter.
