The Brisbane Lions and Logan City Council in June 2012 launched the Logan Sports Development Programs aimed at providing Logan residents with more opportunities to enjoy sport and recreation in the city.
The program involves the Brisbane Lions providing $75,000 annually to help make sport more accessible to local residents.
Logan Mayor Pam Parker said the program was a great community initiative by the Brisbane Lions.
"With the funding the Lions have provided, we will be able to provide grants to individuals and clubs to assist with registration fees, equipment, travel to state, national and international competitions, infrastructure and club development," she said.
"Sport is important to all of our community, but especially our younger generation. Keeping kids in sport not only has the obvious benefits of improving health and fitness, but it also teaches them the attributes of teamwork, sportsmanship, commitment and importantly how to win and lose graciously.
"These are all valuable life skills; skills that will set our children on a path to a successful future."
Brisbane Lions CEO Malcolm Holmes said that Logan was a significant priority area for the Brisbane Lions.
“Supporting community sport in Logan is absolutely crucial and something that is very important to us as a football Club,” Mr Holmes said.
“We want to see the community getting out there and making the most of the facilities and opportunities that this fantastic region has to offer, and we hope that this grant program will help to achieve this.”
Council will assess applications for the Logan Sports Development Program twice a year, in February/March and August/September. Individuals can apply for up to $1,000 per year, while clubs can apply for up to $5,000 per year.
