DESPITE a last-start win against the competition leaders, Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss said it would be another four weeks before he could tell whether his team was progressing.

After the Lions had taken care of then frontrunners West Coast by two points at the Gabba 10 days ago, Voss gave the players four days off ahead of last weekend's bye.

But speaking on Wednesday for the first since the landmark victory, he was in no mood for making big statements.

It was the Lions' first win over a top eight team in exactly two seasons, but the Voss said he was in no position to know if it would kick-start a revival or not.

"Ask me in a month's time," he said.

"The guys have been training well for a month. In terms of training, there's not really much has changed except hopefully when they get to the line they're not going in hoping they're going to win, they're coming with a thought there's a reasonable chance to get one at the end.

"We've moved on mentally and we need to get our hooks into Hawthorn."

Voss said there was an emotional high after defeating the Eagles and said it was reward for extra effort into training and preparation in recent weeks.

He said the players needed some time off over the bye to recharge mentally and physically.

"But today and yesterday was about being able to hit that reset button and understanding what got us there in the first place … and making that recommitment that the small things we've been implementing are starting to make a difference."

Voss said Sunday's match against Hawthorn was about far more than stopping Coleman Medal leader Lance Franklin.

"We understand he's a good player, important to their structure, but to channel all our energy into one player and think that's going to make the sole difference in the game, we're going to be blinded by it ourselves," he said.

"I don't think that's something we need to fall into. There's a group of guys that need to create pressure on the opposition and that's our focus first and foremost. Ultimately we've got to win our one-on-one battles."

Voss said Simon Black (knee) had to get through Thursday's main training session to be certain of selection.
