With the mercury set to reach 39 degrees in Queensland on Tuesday, the Brisbane Lions made the conscious decision to adjust their training schedule accordingly.

The team’s regular morning session was brought forward even earlier to escape the sweltering summer heat, and there was a greater focus on skills as opposed to conditioning.

The common sense approach was taken to ensure the players don’t get ‘burned out’ - particularly following a tough day of training on Monday.

Some of the Lions players took to Twitter on Monday evening to express their feelings towards the Brisbane heatwave.

“Today would be up there with one of the longest,” Claye Beams Tweeted.

Pearce Hanley and Brent Staker, who were experiencing their first session back since returning from the cooler Arizona climate, also commented on the extreme change in conditions.

“Irishmen shouldn’t have to train when it’s over 35 (degrees) surely,” Hanley Tweeted.

“First official session back today with all the boys. Geez Freaking HOT!” Staker said.

Meanwhile, trade period recruit Stefan Martin told LIONS TV the change in weather had proven one of his biggest challenges so far this pre-season.

“The heat is very tough,” Martin told LIONS TV.

“I find it’s a lot harder running, and you lose your breath a bit easier.”

“It’s also harder to keep hydrated, so I’m going to have to get used to that.”
