JONATHAN Brown kicked a club record 10 goals as the Brisbane Lions made it three wins in succession by belting Carlton by 117 points at the Gabba on Sunday afternoon.

Rhan Hooper also caught the eye with four goals and the Lions delighted the majority of the 27,163-strong crowd with a 25.13 (163) to 6.10 (46) victory – their biggest of the year.

The last time the Lions sang the club song three times in a row was Round 9 of 2006, following a win against Fremantle at the Gabba, and they are now only half a game out of the top eight.

The tone for Sunday’s win was established with a dominant opening 40 minutes, in which the Lions kicked nine goals to Carlton’s two. The second half followed suit and then some, with the Blues managing only two goals compared to the Lions’ 14.

Carlton actually supplied the opening goal of the game through Brendan Fevola in the seventh minute, but looked all at sea in the half-hour that followed as the Lions ran hard from defence, linked up through the midfield and then delivered the ball precisely to the forward line.

With Jed Adcock prominent and Jamie Charman on top in the ruck, there was no shortage of first quarter highlights for the Lions – although a Wayde Mills screamer, a textbook crumbing goal on the left foot from Robbie Copeland and a running Scott Harding major with his first touch were standouts.

The Lions led by 24 points at the first change and appeared set to blow the game wide open early in term two, blasting through three goals in its first 10 minutes.

But the rest of the first half was a scrappy affair and Carlton was able to scramble a pair of goals to Fevola and Kade Simpson to cut the deficit by 29 points at half-time.

Normal service, however, was restored after the resumption of play and the Lions banged through another eight goals in the third stanza, including three apiece from Brown and the impressive Hooper.

The lead was out to 67 points by three-quarter-time and only grew in the final term, as Brown threaded his seventh, eighth and ninth and 10 goals and Hooper marked his fourth with a gleeful celebration.

Brown’s ninth major for the afternoon, a towering drop punt from 55m, stretched the Lions’ advantage past 100 points and equalled Daniel Bradshaw’s club benchmark, set in 2005 against Melbourne.

The record was smashed two minutes later with another long, unerring set shot.

Aside from Brown and the improving Hooper, the Lions got great service from Adcock, who seemed to be without an opponent for much of the first three quarters and accumulated 23 possessions and a career-high three goals.

The ever-consistent Nigel Lappin racked up 31 disposals, Tim Notting (25 touches) ran hard throughout and Merrett did another fine job on Fevola.

In reality, the Lions did not have a bad player, while Carlton left far too much to too few, with Heath Scotland leading their possession-count with 26.
