SIMON Black said the hurt of losing against Gold Coast earlier this season inspired him to a stellar showing against the Suns on Saturday night.

Black won the Marcus Ashcroft Medal for best afield in the Brisbane Lions' 62-point win, racking up 31 disposals, nine clearances and a classy last quarter goal to edge out teammate Matthew Leuenberger for the award.

The 32-year-old said he took the inaugural QClash loss against the Suns personally after the Gold Coast midfield smashed the Lions 60-30 in the clearances.

Black wasn't about to let that happen again and led the engine room to a 50-28 victory in that count.

"I was hurting a lot from that last game, particularly all those clearance numbers because that's where I play and have an ownership for that part of the ground so it was really disappointing," he said.

"It was a big focus. I've never been in a game where we've lost by 30 clearances so it was an absolute mauling. We knew we had to be a lot better and we came up with a couple of different structures to counter what they were doing and it worked pretty well tonight - it was a real flip of the coin from last time."

Black said the Lions had steeled themselves for the match after the round-seven upset.

Last time around he was at the centre of the pre-match barbs, but camps were decidedly quieter in the build-up to Saturday night.

"It was a big game for the club," Black said. "The second game of the rivalry and they got us the first time. We really wanted to win that. We played a lot better than last time we played them.

"We've been really competitive a lot of the games this year, but just haven't been able to do it for long enough. The guys were up for it tonight and it showed."

Black has played 293 games for the Lions and has indicated he is keen to play on again next season.

With a career-high in average disposals this season, Lions fans will be glad to see the No.20 go around for as long as he wants.
