Ooh Aah Ash McGrath
I think it would be really good if there was a womens AFL competition.
Adam from Sunbury (VIC)
The media plays a big role in football these days and all the players understand that they have a job to do when it comes to reporting information.
If you’re a big name player, people are always going to want to know about you - and I guess that comes with the territory.
But some of the personal stuff about players can get a bit out of hand - particularly if it’s not always 100% accurate. I think there are some things that should probably stay in-house.
I've always been interested to know how the players are notified of their selection or omission from the team to play on the weekend. Is the entire playing squad together at the time, or does Vossy see each player individually? How does it work?
Greg from Toowoomba (QLD)
Most times the coach will get in touch with you and let you know whether you are playing or not.
But sometimes you don’t find out that you’re playing until the teams are announced on a Thursday night and you read it on the Lions website.
Hey Ash, I'm an old 'Roy Boy' now following Brisbane, living in Finland. I have started a team in my city - the Turku Dockers - and I am currently the coach of the Finnish national team. There seems to be a growing trend of more international players coming to AFL. What benefits do these guys bring to a club?
Grant from Turku (FINLAND)
Our Irish guys bring great accents, pale skin and provide us with a good place to stay overseas during the off-season.
Don Barry - our PNG panther - has some really good stories and teaches the boys plenty about different cultures.
They are all really skilled and pick the game up quickly. It’s great to see so many international players joining the AFL.
Hi Ash. Do you think any of our boys have a chance at the NAB Rising Star award this year?
Katharine from Niagara Park (NSW)
Yeah, there are a few guys who could be a chance.
‘Budget’ Banfield, Tom Rockliff and Jack Redden are all playing good footy and are eligible.
After meeting Simon Black in the stands at the Bulldogs game, I was wondering if all the players are as nice as him?
David from Wynnum (QLD)
No, they’re not. Blacky is an angel and one of the nicest blokes you will ever meet.
Some of the young guys like Claye Beams, Ryan Harwood and Broc McCauley have been brought up really well and are very nice. Make sure you say ‘hi’ to them when you have a chance.
But steer clear of Michael Rischitelli, he can get a bit grumpy.
Do any of the boys use Twitter?
John from Melbourne (VIC)
I’m not really sure, but I know that a few boys might be joining up when the Club’s Twitter page starts later in the year.
I’m pretty sure Joel Patfull is on it - he seems to be on every other dating website at the moment.
What do you think about women's professional football? Do you think it could take off?
Siobhan from Shailer Park (QLD)
I think it would be really good if there was a women’s competition, but I think it will be a while before it really takes off.
There are heaps of females out there who play in local competitions which I think is great for the game.
Because most of the Lions games are at night, does that mean you do most of your training at night?
Megan from Launceston (TAS)
No, not really.
We usually train either late in the afternoon (around 4pm) or first thing in the morning (around 9am) to avoid the Queensland heat.
