When Simon Black got up gingerly from a midfield contest showing signs of knee discomfort last Saturday night against St Kilda, Lions fans naturally had cause for concern.

Fortunately the incident proved only minor, allowing Black to continue on and have a profound impact on the match with a game-high 31 disposals.

The Brownlow Medallist’s knee has been a popular talking point of late, having kept him sidelined for three of the Lions’ past six matches.

But Lions Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Matt Hass said the latest incident was of little concern.

“Blacky got a knock to his knee, but it was nothing too sinister,” Hass told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.

“It was just a knee clash with another player, so he’s tracking along fine (for this week).”

Black’s knee problems first surfaced back in Round 9 when he was subbed off at half-time of the Lions’ match against the Kangaroos.

The injury was later revealed as one that would likely require ongoing management and rehabilitation.

When quizzed about his knee last week, Black said that he had sought advice from Senior Coach Michael Voss who carried a similar ailment throughout the latter stages of his playing career.

"I had a good chat to Vossy about it and being able to manage it throughout the week, and as the weeks go along," Black said.

"He managed his knee for a number of years so he's certainly a good sounding board to bounce off in that regard."

Black, who took home the Marcus Ashcroft Medal as the best player in QClash2, is expected to line-up against the Gold Coast Suns this Saturday in the fourth official meeting between Queensland’s two AFL teams.

The only fresh injury concerns for the Lions surround Jesse O’Brien and Billy Longer, albeit both are considered minor.

O’Brien is still be assessed after experiencing some groin soreness, while Longer looks set for a short stint on the sidelines after hurting his knee against Labrador last week.
