Even as he approaches his 14th AFL season, triple Premiership superstar Simon Black will no doubt once again prove a vital cog in the Lions’ midfield machine.

But in 2012, Black is most excited about the prospect of passing on his mantle as the midfield general, and sharing the role he has made his own over the past decade with a number of his younger team-mates.

During his live online chat with Lions fans on Wednesday, the 32 year-old said that he has enjoyed passing on his extensive knowledge to those who will ultimate succeed him.

“I've enjoyed the role a lot. I get a kick out of seeing the younger guys improve because of some advice I might have given them or a suggestion I've made,” Black said.

“I really enjoy working with the younger guys because you can make a real difference.”

Black also mentioned that competition for positions in the centre of the ground has becoming even fiercer following the rapid development of his fellow midfielders.

“I’m enjoying the healthy competition the younger guys are giving me,” he said.

“We’re trying to grow the size of our midfield group. The likes of Claye Beams, Josh Green, Ryan Harwood and Jared Polec are starting to push for spots in our midfield. Chances are they’ll probably push me out of a spot in the near future!”

“It’s kind of funny, to be pretty much 10 years older than the next oldest guy in our midfield now, except for Ben Hudson.”
