The AFL Match Panel has decied that Lions midfielder Jack Redden has no case to answer after he was initially reported for striking Carlton's Dennis Armfield during last Thursday's match at the Gabba.

The match day report was assessed by the Match Review Panel who acknowledged that Redden made late contact after Armfield disposed of the ball.

But after viewing available footage, speaking to the umpire who laid the report and receiving a medical report from the Carlton Football Club, it was the view of the Panel the initial contact was to Armfield's shoulder region with the inside of Redden's arm.

The high contact made was also below the force required to constitue a reportable offence, so no further action was taken.

However, Redden was charged by the Match Review Panel for a separate offence of wrestling Carlton's Mitch Robinson during the second quarter.

In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea. A first offence for wrestling is a $1200 sanction, however an early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $900 sanction.

Regardless of the outcome of the wrestling charge, Redden will be available to take his place in the Lions' line-up for this Saturday's tough assignment against Fremantle at Paterson's Stadium.
