A large number of the Brisbane Lions’ triumphant 2002 Grand Final side gathered in Melbourne on Thursday night to celebrate the anniversary of winning back-to-back Premierships.

It was almost 10 years to the day since the Lions had defeated Collingwood by nine points, and past players and coaches joined together at the exclusive event to reflect on their former glories.

Lions.com.au spoke with some of the Premiership players in attendance about their own memories from that last Saturday in September.

Clark Keating

“The 2002 Grand Final was quite special to me because throughout the whole year, I played most of the game with the Reserves. I was competing for a spot against the likes of [Beau] McDonald and [Jamie] Charman, and it wasn’t until the Finals came around that the coach gave me an opportunity to play. Fortunately I kept my spot during the Finals campaign and hopefully I did my bit for the team come Grand Final day.”

Luke Power

“It was the equal greatest moment of my career - obviously along with 2001 and 2003. The first Premiership was more a sense of disbelief, because we probably never thought we could do it, while the second one was probably relief because we were the best side all year and were expected to win.”

Craig McRae

“Just the memories of playing together were very special. But it seems like an eternity - it feels more like 30 years than 10 years ago.”

Martin Pike

“Personally I remember starting pretty well, but then had to watch my teammates win the Grand Final from the bench in the second half, which was hard. I did my groin early (in the second quarter) and that’s one injury you can’t really jab. To the boys’ credit, and the whole football Club’s credit, we were able to complete the mission and beat Collingwood - and we would have done it a lot easier if I’d played in the second half (laughs).”
