Miracle win up with best: Voss
Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss is full of admiration for his team after their come-from-behind victory over Carlton
Voss was understandably beaming in the post match press conference after watching his Lions turn a 30-point deficit in the last quarter into a memorable seven-point win at the Gabba in his first finals match as a coach.
The Lions have made a habit of coming back from a long way down this season, and Voss said they had confidence they could do it again.
"It’s been our season hasn’t it? We’re the comeback kings," he said.
"Thirty points down in the last quarter, that’s an incredible feat to be able to come back from that situation and get over the line. From a club sense it’s certainly up there with one of our best wins we’ve ever had.
"At three quarter-time we asked for that extra effort and they gave it.
"They certainly don’t give up and that’s been a big thing for us is they just never give up and they’ve just gone the whole way and got the result."
Voss said Carlton had been getting the better of the Lions at the clearances and it was a matter of shutting that area down to start making inroads.
He said the Lions had to open things up and roll the dice.
Voss singled out one critical contest midway through the final quarter where youngster James Polkinghorne fought for a ball in dispute with Carlton superstar Chris Judd.
"Pokinghorne had to hold his ground and he just kept going and went straight through the contest and I thought that was a critical moment,” he said.
"When a young man had to stand his ground against an exceptionally senior player who does that time and time again. What that does is that raises the standards for everybody else because the next person can’t let that person down."
Simon Black, Daniel Merrett and Daniel Bradshaw all came into the match under an injury cloud but all three starred. And Voss gave them all a huge wrap.
He said if there was Brownlow Medal voting, all three would poll after Black had 29 touches, Bradshaw kicked five goals, including the final two to seal victory, and Merrett held Brendan Fevola to just three majors.
Black was only a confirmed starter at 2pm on the day of the match.
"He rigorously worked all week to get himself up and that says what a professional he is. Then he came out and put in that sort of performance which was remarkable," Voss said.
Voss said the trio all came through the game well and he expected them to be fit for Friday night’s semi-final against the Western Bulldogs.
He said Jed Adcock (knee), Josh Drummond (quad) and Joel Macdonald who he only described as “injured” would come into calculations for the match.
