Lions fans are no doubt already salivating at the prospect of having first round draftee Billy Longer working together with Matthew Leuenberger in the Club’s ruck division over the next decade.

202cm Longer, whose leadership and athletic credentials saw him become one of the most sought-after teenage talents in the country, also brings with him a quirky style of contesting the ruck.

The Northern Knights product is a natural right-footer, but is unique in the sense that he palms the ball down using his left hand.

While the technique could be considered unconventional, it has proven successful throughout his junior career.

"I get a lot more height when I jump off my right leg, so it is just natural to use my left arm to get as much reach as possible," Longer said.

"I do favour using my left hand, but I can use my right as well. So it does open up the full 360 degrees."

It’s certainly not uncommon for elite athletes to have such quirks, with many capable of using both sides of their body effectively.

For instance, Captain Jonathan Brown is renowned for his deadly right boot which is capable of splitting the goals from well outside 50 metres, yet bowls left arm pace when handed a cricket ball during summer.

Brown also writes and handballs left-handed.
