THE BRISBANE Lions will take the best available player rather than target certain positions with their first pick at November's NAB AFL Draft.

Coach Michael Voss said the Lions would take a different philosophy to the draft than in previous seasons because their finals finish meant they were lower in the pecking order.

Their first choice is not until pick No.12.

"We've got a range of players we're speaking to," he said. "If we don't have a type of player we've got to go down a different route.

"Last year we could probably be a bit more particular and we could start to focus in but, realistically, by the time we get around to where we are, we are looking for the best player possible.

"If that happens to be a tall, we'll go with that and if it happens to be a small, we'll go with that too."

Speaking after attendees at the NAB AFL Draft Camp in Canberra had completed the dreaded beep test at the Australian Institute of Sport, Voss said it gave a good indication of players' resolve.

"I probably don't necessarily have a look at the result per se but more look along the lines of: can they hang in there for longer than they look like they can hang in there?" he said.

"[It's good] just to see if they have that bit of internal fight. I reckon if they can show those qualities you can build on that."

Voss paid particular attention to the new kicking test that was used for the first time on Wednesday morning.

Geelong Falcons forward Gary Rohan led the scoring with 23 points at 77 per cent efficiency and Voss said clubs would put plenty of emphasis on the results.

"It was a real good study," he said. "We're playing footy and having a skills test is exceptional.

"We're trying to put that into place at the Lions ... and be able to benchmark that not only against 18-year-olds today but 18-year-olds tomorrow and when they come into the AFL system to see where they're at.

"I think it's really good to be able to have a test like that to show when everyone's around and under a bit of pressure that they can hit their targets."
