BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss hopes to carry the "Queensland spirit" shown by the state's rugby league team on Wednesday night when his men play the Swans in Sydney on Saturday.

Queensland won its seventh straight State of Origin rugby league series with a 21-20 win over NSW, and it's a momentum Voss hopes can cross codes at the SCG.

The Lions have beaten the Swans just twice in the past eight years - and only once in Sydney - and were belted by 65 and 52 points in last year's two encounters.

However after three wins in its past four matches, including successive hammerings of the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, they take some momentum to the Harbour City.

"We come in with a bit different form to what we've done the last couple of times," Voss said at Lions' training on Friday morning prior to flying south.

"They've been able to roll us a little bit too easy on occasions. It's about being able to maintain that Queensland spirit and get down there and do the Queenslanders proud because that's what we'll be carrying down there a bit."

The Lions were forced into making three changes to the team that defeated Melbourne by 61 points last Sunday, with Ash McGrath (hamstring), Mitch Golby (foot) and Jared Polec (foot) all out.

Cheynee Stiller comes in to play his 100th game, while fan favourite and second-year player Pat Karnezis will return along with rookie Jack Crisp.

Voss was full of praise for the Swans, hinting that the Lions had modelled themselves ever-so-slightly on their southern rivals.

"If there's a benchmark in the way you can execute, and discipline, and the way you go about it, and hunger to take the ball off the opposition, they've been able to demonstrate that for a long period of time," he said.

"So it's certainly been something we've emphasised among our group for a while and one of the main reasons why we've got better as a group."

Voss said he did not expect the injury hiccups to affect the Lions and had been pleased with the response in the month following the upset round 10 win over West Coast.

"You're never too sure … whether you'll rest on your laurels or not but certainly the attitude around the place and the training and way they've applied themselves, they haven't missed a step, they've been very good.

"I think we got what we needed and now it's about being able to continue that momentum right to the end of the season."
