Now that the 2012 AFL Season has officially come to a close, lions.com.au takes a quick look back at some of the more memorable moments from the Club’s campaign.

Lions fans also had the chance to spruik their favourite moments courtesy of the Channel Seven listening booth prior to the team’s final home match of the season against the Western Bulldogs.

Brown’s 500th goal
Captain Jonathan Brown became just the fourth player in combined Club history to kick 500 goals, in the Lions’ Round 4 match against the Gold Coast Suns at the Gabba.

Black’s 300th game
Simon Black reached one of the great milestones when he ran out for his 300th AFL match against Geelong in Round 5 at the Gabba. He became the first, and only, player in VFL/AFL history to have achieved the ‘Big Four’ - play 300 games, be part of a Premiership, take home the Brownlow Medal, and win the Norm Smith Medal.

Daniel Merrett’s seven-goal haul
Who would’ve thought that Daniel Merrett would kick the biggest bag of goals of any Lions player in 2012? The regular full-back did exactly that in Round 8 against GWS when he slotted seven goals in a dominant display. Remarkably, five of his goals came from a blistering opening quarter.

Polkinghorne’s torpedo
James Polkinghorne lifted the Lions to one of their best wins for the season in Round 10 against the West Coast Eagles - who were the ladder leaders at the time. In the dying minutes, Polkinghorne roosted a 65m torpedo on the run which sailed through the big sticks and handed his team the lead, and ultimately, the win.

Hall of Fame celebration match
An emotionally charged Lions outfit dominated the Western Bulldogs in Melbourne on the eve of the Club’s inaugural Hall of Fame celebration. The team was spurred on by a vocal Victorian crowd and a Fitzroy-inspired guernsey which paid tribute to the Club’s proud history.

“My favouriote moment was when I went to Melbourne to watch the mighty Lions beat the Bulldogs in the Hall of Fame game,” one Lions member revealed.

“It was a brilliant game. The guys were at it from the moment the ball bounced and I loved every minute of it.”

Adelaide Crows comeback
After trailing by as many as 38 points early in their match against the Finals-bound Crows in Round 21 - most had cause to write the weary Lions off. But an inspired second half saw the Lions claw their way back to secure a thrilling 10-point win.

Daniel Rich’s grand finale
Together with Daniel Merrett’s seven goals in Round 8, Daniel Rich produced one of the best individual efforts for the Lions’ season against the Western Bulldogs in the team’s final match for 2012. Rich kicked collected 25 disposals, kicked four goals and sent the ball inside 50 metres 11 times (most of which also resulted in goals).

Patfull Club Champion
Joel Patfull became the first Lions defender since Justin Leppitsch in 1999 to receive the Club’s highest individual honour - the Merrett-Murray Medal - at the Club Champion dinner at the Gabba. Patfull proved a popular winner, having rarely been beaten by his opponent all season.

Reserves Premiership
The Brisbane Lions secured their first State League Premiership in 11 years by defeating the NT Thunder by 10 goals in the NEAFL Grand Final. It was a fitting end for the young Reserves side who had enjoyed a near faultless season under the tutelage of Coach Nathan Clarke. The Reserves went on to claim the NEAFL Inter-Conference Championship the following week in Canberra with a resounding win over Eastern Conference Premiers Queanbeyan.
