At the ripe old age of 33, Simon Black continues to prove remarkably durable, having missed just 11 senior matches since 2001.

Even after breaking his hand against Carlton in Round 2 earlier this season, Black returned in time for the team’s Round 4 match against Gold Coast and finished as one of the Lions’ best.

It begs the question whether the veteran midfielder has hidden healing powers unlike any other human being.

Lions Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton could only marvel at the Brownlow Medallist during his weekly Bupa Recovery Report on lions.com.au.

“He pulled up no worries. The hand wasn’t an issue for him,” Burton said.

“The old fella just continues to cruise around picking up 30 (disposals) every week.”

“Now he’s looking forward to playing his 300th - as the entire Club is.”

Burton also revealed that Captain Jonathan Brown’s cramping against the Suns was simply a product of match fitness, while late withdrawal James Polkinghorne was expected to be fit for this weekend.

“That’s just a match fitness issue (with Brown). He’s got two games under his belt so you’d think he’d be right from here on in,” Burton said.

“Plus, in slippery conditions you tend to stabilise your muscles a bit more which adds to the workload as well.”

“As for Polks, he just tweaked his ankle in training last week and should be fine for this week. He’ll go through his normal paces and should be right to go on Saturday.”
