THE BRISBANE Lions have kept their finals chances alive by thrashing top-four hopeful Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday night.

The Lions set up their massive 93-point win with an inspired first half in which they kicked 11 goals to three, establishing a 54-point advantage at the long break before powering on to record a 22.17 (149) to 7.14 (56) win.

The visitors’ midfield set up the win, with Simon Black, Jed Adcock (four goals), Nigel Lappin and Cheynee Stiller all providing plenty of run and drive through the middle.

In attack, it was Jared Brennan (seven goals) who caught the Magpies napping in the first half as he ran amok, booting five goals and proving a tough match-up with his athleticism while Jonathan Brown was a constant threat and got better as the game wore on.

The Lions came into the match on the back of three impressive victories and they immediately picked up where they left off.

They stunned Collingwood with a seven-goal opening burst, while four goals to two in the second term ensured the match was effectively over by the main change.

Black, who finished the game with 30 possessions but rested the final part of the match, had a hand in several of his side’s early goals as the Lions were on top in every part of the ground.

Rhan Hooper was lively in attack, while Daniel Merrett and Jason Roe nullified the Magpies’ tall timber and allowed the visitors’ runners to set up numerous attacks with their run from half back.

Brisbane’s dominance continued after half time, despite Nick Maxwell booting two goals for the Pies.

Brennan threaded his sixth from the boundary, Hooper kicked two while Roe waltzed forward to kick one of five Lions goals for the term as Brisbane took an unassailable 69-point lead at the final break.

The procession continued in the final term, with the Lions steamrolling their way to their greatest-ever winning margin over Collingwood, further boosting their percentage and announcing themselves as a legitimate threat to make a run at the top eight.

The win makes it four on the trot for Leigh Matthews’ side but this one – achieved at the home of football and in front of a pro-Collingwood crowd – would rival the one achieved in the west against the Eagles which started the run.

The Lions host the Kangaroos in a crunch match at the Gabba next week.
