Daniel Merrett is available to play in this Saturday's QClash against the Gold Coast Suns after his two-match sanction was downgraded at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

Merrett had originally been charged with a Level Two offence of charging St Kilda's Nick Riewoldt during last Saturday night's match at the Gabba, but opted to contest the ban handed down by the Match Review Panel.

The Tribunal found Merrett's marking attempt to be 'negligent' conduct - rather than 'reckless' as previously determined - which downgraded the penalty to a total of 93.75 demerit points.

While those points will still remain on Merrett's future record, it means that he is now free to take his place in the Lions' line-up against the Suns this weekend.

"I'm obviously happy with the outcome," Merrett said after pleading his case to the Tribunal.

"We got a fair hearing and I can't wait to get out there this weekend."

Merrett's availability provides the Lions with a significant boost ahead of QClash 4 at Metricon Stadium.

The big Queenslander was moved forward at the beginning of 2012 and has gone onto kick 23 goals so far this season to rank second at the Club behind Jonathan Brown (26). He has also provided valuable back-up as a pinch-hitting ruckman.

It was welcome news for the Club who lost gun midfielder Daniel Rich for two matches earlier in the day after he pleaded guilty to a rough conduct charge.
