The Brisbane Lions look set for another pre-season slog in the wet this Saturday night with weather reports indicating that heavy rain is expected in Alice Springs for the team’s NAB Cup clash against Adelaide.

The forecast comes after the Club’s first round of NAB Cup matches against Melbourne and the Gold Coast were severely hampered following a typical Queensland summer downpour.

In fact, a total of just seven goals were kicked across the Lions’ two matches last weekend, as teams struggled to score in the slippery conditions.

But the Lions will hold no fear of what lies ahead on Saturday night, having experienced plenty of wet weather football in previous years during the pre-season competition.

In 2010, torrential rain in the nation’s capital transformed Manuka Oval into a quagmire in time for the Lions’ NAB Cup opener against the Western Bulldogs.

After careful inspection of the ground by authorities, the match went ahead and the Lions went down by eight points after the Bulldogs score a late ‘super goal’.

Two weeks later, a pre-planned Lions practice match against Geelong at Southport was moved to Melbourne due to the heavy rain conditions in Queensland, only to have the rescheduled game cancelled before it began.

On this occasion, Visy Park was engulfed in darkness before being hit by one of the heaviest storms Melbourne has experienced in years, with the unrelenting rain, hail, thunder and lightning forcing both teams back into their changerooms just five minutes into their pre-game warm-up.

After discussions between both sides and the AFL, the match was deemed unsafe for the players and subsequently abandoned, leaving both clubs without valuable match practice on the eve of the season.

The Lions have also experienced extreme pre-season conditions on separate occasions in Cairns over the years.

A win against the undefeated Crows this Saturday night at Traeger Park will keep the Club’s hopes of playing in the NAB Cup Grand Final alive, with a third round match scheduled against Carlton in Maroochydore the following week.
