Slow starts hurting us: Voss
Brisbane Lions coach considers changing pre-game approach to spark his side
The Lions spotted the Western Bulldogs a 33-point half time lead before charging home to lose by 18 points at the Gabba on Saturday night, and Voss said his side's slow starts are starting to become a source of frustration.
“Maybe I’m too nice before the game,” Voss said.
“I need to start finger-pointing a little bit at the start of the game rather than at half time.
“I’m going to replicate a scenario where I’m going to say 'guys, we’re six goals down, you’re going to cop a spray and then we’re going to go out there and away we go'. That's what I feel like doing sometimes.”
In round 18 against Collingwood, the Lions led by 14 points at the main break before going down by 40 points. Voss said his pre-game talk to the players on that occasion may have been more aggressive for such a big game against quality opposition at the MCG.
“We just haven’t started well across the whole year, and we’ve got to find that little bit that gets them going at the start of the game," he said.
“It’s not about ability, it is completely around 'do you want to do it, or don’t you?' The players have the ability - they know what to do.”
The Lions take on Port Adelaide for the second time in seven weeks at the Gabba on Saturday night.
Port thumped the Lions by 48 points in round 14, with Jared Brennan reported for head-butting Josh Carr in the final quarter.
Voss says the Power, who are just half a game outside the top eight, are at their most dangerous when they are under pressure.
“The last time we played Port their backs were against the wall too, and they were able to roll us. We've got a pretty critical game coming up,” Voss said.
While the Lions are now assured of their first finals appearance since 2004, Voss says it’s a significant achievement.
“For us as a footballing team, it’s a fantastic step,” Voss said.
“The challenge for us is being able to live in the moment and making sure that we can get momentum coming into the finals.”
