As a keen supporter of the EPL and soccer in general, I am keeping a pretty close eye on the FIFA World Cup being played over in South Africa.

I have been regularly tuning in to watch the earlier matches which are broadcast into Australian live at the reasonable time of 9:30pm, but I generally don’t stay up till the early hours of the morning to watch the later games.

I’d probably only consider setting my alarm for 4:30am if there was an absolutely cracking match scheduled between, let’s say, Spain and Brazil.

As a big Manchester United fan in the EPL, English striker Wayne Rooney is probably my favourite current player although I also love watching Barcelona’s Lionel Messi go about his business. Messi - who will be representing Argentina at the World Cup - is already considered one of the best players of his generation at just 23 years of age.

It was obviously a disappointing result for the Aussies the other night going down 4-0, but Germany are one of the best teams in the world and will give the tournament a serious shake this year.

Personally, I think Brazil will win its sixth World Cup. They have quality players in every position and should advance through their group stages without too much difficulty.

The World Cup tournament has been a pretty constant topic of conversation around the Club and it’s been great to see all the Lions players embrace it.

In fact, the boys all turned up to the Club last Wednesday in their favourite soccer jerseys and we held a World Cup sweep where players and football staff could bid on teams they think would win in an auction run by Browny.

Everyone got involved and there was some serious competition among the players to see who could secure the more fancied teams such as Spain and Brazil. It was all just for a bit of fun, but the eventual winner will still take home a pretty substantial kitty.

Myself and Luke Power - who is also a huge soccer fan - formed a syndicate and we ended up getting Argentina.

While the world game is certainly occupying most of the sport headlines at the moment, the Lions are still focussed on turning things around against Richmond at the Gabba this Saturday night.

The Tigers have a good recent history against us and are in good form with Jack Riewoldt on fire up forward.

I imagine they will be confident that they can beat us, but at the same time we really need the four points to give us some momentum for the second half of the season.
