Murray backs Roys
Lions Legend Kevin Murray says it’s “fantastic” that three of Fitzroy’s VAFA Premier C Division teams will be playing off in Grand Finals
Murray - who is a passionate supporter of the amateur club - has been spotted regularly at his old stomping ground, the Brunswick Street Oval, watching Fitzroy FC play throughout the season.
Even though the VAFA Finals will be played in Sandringham, the Lions Hall of Famer said there was something special about watching them play at home.
“What’s great when you come down to Brunswick Street to watch Fitzroy is you see so many old timers who love Fitzroy cheering the club on just like the old days,” Murray said.
“I love coming down to Fitzroy and seeing all these all people who barracking for them when I was playing.”
“They would all very proud of what Fitzroy have achieved this year. To have all three teams in Grand Finals is just something so special for the great club that is Fitzroy.”
Murray also offered some sound advice in the lead-up to Saturday’s big game.
“It’s teamwork that gets you to a Grand Final - forget about any individual honours no matter how good they may be - you can’t beat teamwork,” Murray said.
“For the players playing - keep your eye on the ball, go in hard and get it, always have two men to back your teammates. It doesn’t matter if they only win by a point, win or lose - I know the boys will give their best.”
Fitzroy FC will also wear a brand new clash strip for their match against Parkdale - which is based on previous Fitzroy jumpers in a couple of important ways.
The blue FFC logo, worn by the Club in the VFL between 1942 and 1955 again graces an official jumper, while the chevrons down the sides, echo the chevrons of Fitzroy's AFL pre-season jumper of 1995-1996. And of course the gold colour was present on Fitzroy's official jumper between 1884 and 1908 and 1974 to the present.
