OFF-FIELD AWARDS

LIONS GROUP CHAMPION: ‘The Blowtorch’ (TBC)

The Lions’ 2011 AFL Dream Team competition has been run and won with some mystery surrounding the overall winner.

‘bradpitt FC’ had been leading all registered participants in the Lions’ League since Round 19 only to vanish entirely from the leaderboard in the final week of the season.

It is a strange set of circumstances surrounding hot favourite ‘bradpitt FC’ - coached by Josh - with the only explanation being that his team had somehow been deregistered from the AFL Dream Team competition.

This allowed ‘The Blowtorch’ - who initially relinquished the lead after Round 18 - to move back into first place and stake claim to the major prize. A big Round 24 score helped ‘Bob’s Hacks’ lock in second position while ‘Jed’s Army’ rounded out the top three.

That said, the Club will wait until Wednesday before contacting the eventual winners and distributing prizes in case there has been an online error with the final results.

BEST PERFORMED LIONS PLAYER: Joel Patfull

Joel Patfull helped his team - ‘Patfull’s Posse’ - take out the honour of best Lions Dream Teamer for 2011 and finish an honourable 149th overall (out of close to 700 teams).

Patfull spent the entire season locked in a tight battle with ‘Richy’s Rockets’, but managed to keep the 2009 Rising Star at arm’s length, despite some anxious momments.

Patfull and Rich were by far the best two performed Lions teams, with Todd Banfield finishing third (334th overall) and Rohan Bewick not far behind in fourth (351st overall).

Ash McGrath, who once again let his team ‘Boonj’s Bandits’ get off to a terrible start, stormed home to finish just six spots below Bewick on the overall leaderboard.

Claye Beams finished last out of the ten players who participated, but in fairness, seemed to have lost interest in his team early in the piece which would explain some of his sub-1,000 point scores.

149. Patfull’s Posse (Joel Patfull) - 48,832
163. Richy’s Rockets (Daniel Rich) - 48,666

ON-FIELD AWARDS

MOST LIONS POINTS (OVERALL): Jack Redden

Jack Redden not only scored more AFL Dream Team points than any other Lions player in 2011, but finished 5th overall in the AFL behind perennial stars Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood), Matthew Boys (Western Bulldogs), Dane Swan (Collingwood) and Marc Murphy (Carlton).

It was testament to his consistency that he could rack up 2,402 points across 22 matches to finish ahead of Tom Rockliff (2,241) and Simon Black (2,042).

Only seven times did Redden fail to crack 100 points, and cracked the ‘ton’ in 11 of his final 13 matches.

Tom Rockliff, meanwhile, finished the season strongly with the team’s highest score in Round 24 against the Sydney Swans.

LIONS MOST POINTS (ROUND 24)
1. Tom Rockliff - 119
2. Matthew Leuenberger - 109
3. Daniel Rich - 93
4. Jed Adcock - 92
5. Pearce Hanley - 87
5. James Hawksley - 87

4. Matthew Leuenberger - 1,999

BEST SCORING MIDFIELDER: Jack Redden (2,402)

No surprises here considering Redden scored more points than any other Lions player.

BEST SCORING RUCKMAN: Matthew Leuenberger (1,999)

Leuenberger came along in leaps and bounds in 2011. In fact, he was the third highest scoring ruckman in the competition behind West Coast’s Dean Cox and North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein.

BEST SCORING DEFENDER: Pearce Hanley (1,764)

Those who had the faith in selecting Irishman Pearce Hanley were handsomely rewarded with some great form down back in 2011.

BEST SCORING FORWARD: James Polkinghorne (1,492)

He may have ranked 8th overall at the Club, but James Polkinghorne takes the cake for best performed Lions forward in the Dream Team competition. He finished close to 400 points clear of his nearest rival - Todd Banfield.

MOST LIONS POINTS (AVERAGE): Tom Rockliff

While Redden held the highest aggregate total, his good mate Rockliff took the cake for highest average score per round.

Rockliff averaged a whopping 112 points per game in 2011 which was helped along with four scores of 132 points or more.

He finished 5th overall in average points per game across the entire competition behind Swan (120.95), Pendlebury (116.64), Boyd (116) and Gold Coast’s Gary Ablett (112.15).

Had it not been for a calf injury which cost the 21 year-old two matches, Rockliff could well have challenged Pendlebury for most points overall in the AFL.

No doubt prospective AFL Dream Team coaches will be keeping an eye on the Benalla boy for 2012!

His 30 disposals, two goals and 13 tackles earned him 151 points which was clearly the best effort of any Lion in Season 2011.

Ruckman Matthew Leuenberger’s 140-point effort against the Gold Coast ranked second while Rockliff and Redden had a long list of scores between 120-140 points.

BIGGEST INDIVIDUAL SCORE

BEST INVESTMENT: Tom Rockliff

Considering his outstanding Dream Team form, there’s little wonder Tom Rockliff’s value rose by more than $100,000 throughout the competition. Even though he started at a premium price, his value soared as quickly as he accumulated points.

Redden and Leuenberger also featured in the top five along with Mitch Golby and Rohan Bewick who proved the pick of the younger players in terms of increasing value.

HIGHEST PRICE HIKE (FINAL PRICE IN BRACKETS)

5. Matthew Leuenberger - ↑$75,800 ($397,100)

MOST POPULAR PLAYER: Jed Adcock

Jed Adcock’s seemingly bargain price at the beginning of the season meant that close to 60,000 AFL Dream Team coaches ensure the Lions Vice-Captain was in their side.

Jed didn’t disappoint either, averaging 84.45 points in his matches and rewarding those who selected him with consistent performances.

In somewhat of a surprise, Broc McCauley and Bart McCulloch finished second and third respectively. McCauley became a popular choice after making his senior debut back in Round 2 while McCulloch - who failed to play a senior game - was an affordable option at just $80,400.
