Cats overrun Suncoast Lions
Draftee Chris Schmidt produced arguably his best game for the Suncoast Lions and Troy Selwood made a solid comeback in Round 3 of the AFLQ Velocity Sports Cup,
Schmidt was one of the few good players for the Suncoast in a dour contest with Broadbeach, the Cats only breaking the game open in the last quarter.
Schmidt and the reliable Sam Sheldon tried to generate some momentum for the Lions, but they were outnumbered and overrun by the Cats.
In a tough game where both sides lacked a focal point in attack, Broadbeach finished all over the Lions in the last quarter to win 10.16 (76)-8.9 (57).
The Cats led by three points at the final change, and three quick goals put paid to the Suncoast, with midfielders Mark Harris, Sam Edwards and Dayne Zorko doing most of the damage.
Selwood was good in his solid return from back surgery, sustaining a bad cut to the face midway through the second, but returning to play a strong part in the second half.
He played only half of each quarter and will build his game time against Morningside at the Gabba next Sunday.
“I would love to be back but I am obviously not fit enough to play AFL yet,” Selwood said after the game.
“Ideally you would like a month to get yourself cherry ripe, but we’ll wait and see.”
There was some bad news on the injury front, however, with Matt Moody and Haydn Kiel both suffering hamstring injuries.
While Moody had not been prominent, his loss in the third term did help the Lions’ cause.
But Josh Drummond came through his third game in good shape and was another solid contributor.
He was used as a defender when the Lions kicked into the wind, and a forward when the Lions kicked with the wind, although the quality of supply made life difficult. But he got better as the game wore on.
The Suncoast sit just above Redland on the AFLQ premiership without a win but are still only one game behind fifth placed Zillmere.
