Forward half turnovers were the costly difference in the Lions’ 42-point loss to Richmond at the MCG on Saturday.

“Our forward half turnovers were - 45 points,” Assistant Coach Danny Daly told the Vero Coaches Wrap.

“What that means is every time the ball went inside Richmond’s forward half, their ability to pressure and to turn the football over against us created them opportunities to score.

“They scored 53 points from forward half turnovers, we only scored 8 points.

“That’s a difference of 45 points and the difference in the game at the end of the day.

“A lot of that wasn’t due entirely to their pressure. It had to do with our skill error, execution and decision making.”

Daly said even though the Lions marginally lost contested possession, there were positives to take out of the result.

The Lions were +5 scoring from stoppages (centre bounce, a throw up or a ball up around the ground), won tackles +7 and lost the second half by just -4 points.

Eric Hipwood in just his second game kicked three-goals and the Lions finished the match with a five-goal final quarter.

“Our contested ball has been a real positive over the past five weeks. We’ve actually won three of those weeks. We were basically even on Saturday against Richmond and we lost one two weeks ago. It’s an area we’ve been focussing on and we’ll continue to do that over the last eight weeks of the season.”
