The Brisbane Lions Reserves have continued where they left off last week with a decisive 5.5.35 to 14.11.95 victory over the Gold Coast Suns Reserves.
The last time they played, Brisbane ran away with the victory in late July by 12 points. This time around, the Suns Reserves were looking to finish their season with a win in a curtain raiser for the senior side on a rainy Saturday morning.
The Suns broke the shackles early in the first term with two goals before the Lions clawed their way back in to the contest with two goals of their own. The wet conditions proved troublesome as players from both sides struggled to stay on their feet in contests. The quarter ended on even terms with Brisbane leading by 2 points.
The second quarter commenced with a quick Suns goal, however it wasn’t enough to halt a surging Lions outfit. Ryan Lester was accurate in front of the posts adding two goals to his name with Jackson Paine and Zac O’Brien both contributing with a goal apiece. The Lions looked comfortable towards the end of the term and went in to the break with a healthy 16 point lead.
Brisbane put the pedal down in the third term and showed class as they piled on another 27 points to the Suns’ one behind. The Lions Reserves were relentless in their application of pressure on the young Suns side and the home side struggled to wrest control of the game. By the end of the third quarter the margin had blown out to 42 points.
The Lions continued their rampage into the fourth quarter, kicking another four goals straight. Zac O’Brien did well, finishing with 21 contested possessions and Jackson Paine finished with 5 goals. The Suns Reserves managed to snare a late goal but would be disappointed in their performance, finally going down by 58 points.
The Lions travel to Sydney next week looking for a win in their last scheduled match of the season against the UWS Giants.
