The Brisbane Lions AFLW side will wear a rainbow-themed guernsey against Geelong in the Club’s first home game of the year to celebrate the creation of the first AFLW Pride Round.
The game will be a celebration of Pride and the new guernseys demonstrate the Lions’ support of the LGBTIQ+ community and the desire to be a Club for all people.
The Lions believe people should be proud of who they are and welcome the AFL’s initiative as another significant step towards being a more inclusive game.
The Club hopes the game at Hickey Park on Sunday can be a celebration of diversity and Lions games become known as a place of welcome for everyone.
While there is just one official Pride Round this season, the Club is committed to creating a supportive environment for all fans and hopes the power of football can be used to build a community where people feel connected to each other and the Club.
Veterans Lauren Arnell and Kate Lutkins modeled the Pride Guernsey for their teammates before training last week and the design was met with raucous applause from the side.
Arnell said the introduction of the Pride Round and the creation of the new guernsey meant a lot to the players.
“I’m so excited that we get to wear this guernsey,’’ she said.
“We are a Club and a team that cares for each other and accepts each other no matter what our differences.
“We are a club for everyone, we embrace diversity, and we believe all people should be treated equally.
“Wearing this strip allows us to show our fans and the wider football community that we are proud to support the Pride Round and that we want everybody to feel welcome to come to our games.’’
The Lions encourage fans, both at the game and at home, to wear rainbow attire while watching the match in support of the LGBTIQ+ community.
All match worn and player issued guernseys will be available via Auction, starting Sunday 7 February 2:00pm.
A limited number of replica guernseys will also be available in-store and online from Thursday 4 February, and on Game Day.
