Any Lions fan watching the broadcast of Sunday’s match against West Coast would have ridden the same roller-coaster of emotions that were portrayed on the face of Senior Coach Michael Voss in the coaches’ box.

During a tense and frenetic final quarter, the cameras often focussed on Voss’ visible displays of anguish, disbelief and frustration.

But his smile that stretched from ear to ear in the dying seconds told the final story.

Speaking with Triple M’s The Grill Team on Monday morning, Voss expressed great pride in his young troops who had overcome the odds to grind out a narrow win against one of the AFL’s Premiership favourites.

He lauded the whole team’s effort, and said it took more than just the last quarter heroics from James Polkinghorne, Niall McKeever and Josh Green to help lift the team over the line.

“We spoke beforehand about how much every inch means in a game, and that was a definite highlight of the game.”

While his team won’t be getting too carried away with one great win, Voss said it was important for the fans to get a glimpse of what might lie ahead in the Club’s future.

“We’ve certainly had some lean times over the past couple of years, but there are a lot of things that our members and supporters should be excited about,” Voss said.

“There is an emerging group coming through. They will be a little up and down at times, but they’re certainly trying their backsides off.”
