Arizona Diary: Mayes
Sam Mayes updates Lions fans on the team’s 28-hour journey to Arizona
I’m not a real fan of flying, so that first 14-hour flight from Brisbane to LA wasn’t ideal.
I struggled personally, but am not exactly sure how the other lads coped.
On the way over, I sat next to one of the corporates who’s come over here with Charmo. He was a really good bloke and we had a bit of a chat, but I mainly spent the time sleeping and watching movies.
From LA, we took another flight to Las Vegas where we jumped on a bus for three hours to Flagstaff.
The bus trip wasn’t too bad, particularly after Burts and Charmo decided to put a movie on.
We also stopped at Subway at the halfway point so the boys could get a feed and break things up a bit.
Once we arrived, everyone pretty much settled in and went straight to sleep because the last thing you want is to be jet-lagged for the first couple of days.
I personally got a pretty good sleep – just had a slight wake-up at 3 o’clock in the morning, but then slept straight through till 7am.
I felt good this morning, and a few of us went to the gym to check out the facilities. The place was huge and it was a bit of an eye-opener.
Tomorrow is the big hike, which should be good. I think the rehab boys are doing a bit of a different hike than Mt Humphreys, but it should be a good experience either way.
I reckon Sammy Michael is one to look out for on the hike. He’s just a really intense man and will be pretty determined to get to the top. Although Sammy will probably stop every half hour to have his cottage cheese and tuna – but everyone loves that about him.
