Senior Coach Michael Voss found himself in a unique position on Thursday – torn between the Brisbane Lions’ past, present and future.
Voss, who attended the 3-Peat Anniversary Luncheon along with most of his premiership-winning teammates, also ensured his present-day pupils were there to witness first-hand the achievements of the most successful side in Club history.
Nonetheless, he was able to enjoy the company of those players who he shared that momentous occasion with a decade ago.
“Certainly I’m the current coach, but I’m (also) a player who was Captain at the time,” Voss said.
“(It’s great to) just to be able to hang around with the guys and have a bit of a chat and find out what they’ve been up to.”
“There are some guys I obviously see a little bit more than others.”
“(On Wednesday night) we had a couple of drinks and just talked about some of the different stories and events – they were good times, very good times.”
But Voss was also happy to consign that particular period to Club history, and focus on the job that lies ahead.
“If I put the coaching hat on a little bit, it also winds up an era,” he said.
“We’re moving on as a football club and we’re a completely different group trying to make our own history in our own way.”
“I guess when our players get a chance to look back on this group, they get a very firm grasp of what success looks like.”
“We all had different stories and came from different backgrounds, but we all came together for one common goal.”
