Back and forward for McGrath
Lions veteran Ash McGrath’s ability to play at either end of the ground presents the coaching staff with both a luxury and a selection quandary.
McGrath started his career as a small forward, but after a successful stint as an attacking defender, has gotten used to switching between those two key roles depending on the Club’s needs.
He was the Lions’ second leading goal-kicker last season with 26 goals (it was the third time he’s placed in the Club’s top three goal scorers for a season), but earned career-best finishes in the Merrett-Murray Medal while playing primarily as a defender in 2009 and 2010.
So the question still remains as to where Lions fans can expect to see McGrath line-up in 2012.
According to the 28 year-old, he is preparing for a move back into defence.
During his live online chat with Lions fans on Wednesday, McGrath revealed that his pre-season training would suggest he will start the season down back.
“(I’ve) been training down back all pre-season, so I think I will start down back,” McGrath said in a response to a fan's question.
“When Josh Drummond gets back in the team, I may get a chance of wandering up forward. So I'll see how I go. You will have to ask Vossy on Twitter (what his plans are).”
In typical fashion, the 2003 Premiership player - whose online column Ooh Aah Ash McGrath has proven a hit with Lions fans over the years - didn’t miss an opportunity to direct some playful gibes towards his team-mates.
“(The new recruits) take my car park and they take my seat on the bus, so I had to let them know that senior players get to pick a seat on the bus and we have the right to choose a car park,” he said.
“Justin Clarke asks so many questions that sometimes I find my ears in bed before I get in there!”
He also didn’t miss handing it out to reigning Club Champion Tom Rockliff when discussing his own plans for Valentine’s Day.
“I will probably be sitting down watching Master Chef, waiting for dinner to be cooked. Maybe I’ll be the one to change nappies - that's about as good as Valentine’s Day gets for me. I might pick a flower out of the garden.”
“I think Tommy Rockliff is the king of Valentine’s Day with his love for his girlfriend. So keep an eye on the sky for some sky-writing from Tommy!”
