Lethal's Lowdown: 25 May 2008
It’s a human performance game. Our kicking skills and not giving the ball back to the opposition constantly need improvement.
“Our last 10 minutes of footy were quite poor, whereas the first 100 or so minutes were exceptionally good. I’ve got the frustration of the last ten minutes in my head, even though the 100 that went before it were good.”
“We got creamed in the centre bounces (in the last 10 minutes). St Kilda’s last four goals basically came from centre clearances. Hayes, Montagna and Harvey were the three players that got hold of us in the last quarter.”
“We decided in the last five minutes to give Simon Black and Luke Power a shorter game considering we have six-day break coming up. All that says is that our next centre bounce squad wasn’t able to hold its own.”
“I’m always conscious of percentage. We’ve had a number of games now where we’ve certainly blown a much bigger margin by having a very poor last 10 minutes which is the down side of our performance.”
“Fortunately, the majority of times we have been far enough in front that all it has cost us is margin. But against Geelong it cost us the game.”
“We need to be able to play the games out a bit stronger than we have in the last month. It would be a better world if we could do that.”
“If I knew what the answer was (to why it is happening) we’d try and solve it pronto.”
On the Lions’ 46-point win against St Kilda on Sunday
“We played against another team that were in the same part of the ladder as us. We had the advantage of being on our home turf. We played good opposition so we are really happy to win by seven or eight goals.”
“We won the ball well, we carried it well, we used it well and I think we were good in defence in making it hard for the opposition. That helped create the 11-goal margin at three quarter time.”
“If the opposition chooses to play a spare man in defence, it’s hard not to be outnumbered in the contest. But we negotiated a way around their spare man down back, which we’re getting plenty of practice with.”
“We kicked 21 goals and apart from that last bit of the game when they went back to man-on-man, we were able to use our extra man in the backline to be a really good attacking option. It was a good exhibition.”
“Their big forwards troubled us a little bit in the air but our big forwards were even better for us.”
