LIONS captain Tom Rockliff says he's confident that, at their best, the duo of Stefan Martin and Matthew Leuenberger have the ability to form one of the best ruck combinations in the game, provided they can get the balance right.
Martin was the form ruckman of the competition by the end 2014, putting injuries behind him to deliver on his potential.
Rockliff told 3AW’s Sports Today, rivals will find it difficult to match the mobility and skill level of the 197cm giant.
“Stef’s taken his game to another level, especially the back half of last year and he’s continued on through the pre-season.”
Coach Justin Leppitsch got a glimpse of the Martin, Leuenberger combination against the Cats in Round 23 last season and has experimented with it over the long break.
“It is exciting. They’re going to have to work in tandem. One of them might have to play forward at times and one in the ruck”, Rockliff said.
“It’s just about getting the balance right for us, but we think that we can do that and they can both probably play.”
The Lions are comfortable Leuenberger is back to full fitness after a 2014 season ruined by a knee injury.
“It will be interesting to see how it all plays out but the good thing is we’ve got a few selection headaches”, Rockliff said.
“We haven’t had that for a long period of time up here.”
