Scans have confirmed Brisbane Lions key forward Eric Hipwood ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during Saturday’s match against St Kilda at Metricon Stadium.
The 23-year-old went down at the end of the first quarter after landing awkwardly and twisting his left knee and was immediately assisted from the field.
Hipwood, who was putting together a stellar 2021 season, will have surgery on the knee tomorrow.
General Manager of Football Danny Daly said scans on Monday confirmed the Club’s concerns around the injury.
“This is very disappointing news for both Hipwood and the Club, but we will rally around him and provide our full support to him,” Daly said.
“He’ll require surgery and rehabilitation over the next 10-12 months and the Club will provide all the help and support that he needs to get back out on the field.
“He’s in good spirits and he’s still got many years of footy ahead of him, and hopefully many more as a Lion.”
The key forward played all 17 matches in the 2021 season and kicked 26 goals.
