As one of only five current Lions players to tip the scales at 100kg or more, there’s no doubt that defender Matt Maguire is one of the biggest and strongest players at the Club.

And he certainly needs to be considering his role requires him to match up against some of the most imposing opposition key forwards.

In 2012, Maguire has already lined up against Melbourne’s Mitch Clark (200cm and 99kg) and Carlton’s Shaun Hampson (201cm and 102kg), with the likes of Kepler Bradley (199cm and 103kg), Zac Clarke (203cm and 92kg) and even possibly Aaron Sandilands (211cm and 122kg) awaiting him up forward in Perth.

But he can at least expect some extra assistance this week with regular full-back Daniel Merrett likely to line-up back in defence due to Captain Jonathan Brown’s return to the forward line.

Chatting live online with Lions fans on Wednesday, Maguire said his strength was essential in helping him compete against his fellow ‘gorillas’.

“My strength as a defender is my strength, so I try to use this to my advantage,” Maguire told Lions fans.

“I also work hard on my speed and endurance, as well as my agility.”

“At training I concentrate on things like staying on the lead of the forward, second efforts, and going for my marks in a contested situation.”

Maguire’s obvious size and strength has also been the subject of some light-hearted ribbing from his Lions team-mates.

During his regular ‘Masterclass’ segment on LIONS TV, ruckman Matthew Leuenberger alleged that Maguire was one of a handful of players who liked to do ‘beach weights’ - that is, bicep weight designed simply to make you look good at the beach.

The question surrounding his apparent ‘fat arms’ was raised during the Live Chat - most likely as a stitch-up from one of the other Lions players - but the 27 year-old was quick to reject those claims.

“Haha, jealousy is a curse,” Maguire said.

“I like chin-ups, dead lifts and upright rows, but you’ll never see me doing a curl. There’s no use in footy for fat arms!” he said.

“Porky Patfull definitely has the fattest arms at the Club. Polks is also partial to a fat arm, as is Assistant Coach Shane Woewodin.”

Among other topics discussed during the entertaining Live Chat, Maguire also spoke about lining up on good mate Mitch Clark, his ‘Sunday Special’ favourite meal, and the likely returns of both Sam Docherty and Dayne Zorko.
