We come from all corners of this land. Our love for the game of football sent us on a journey, but always we carried with us the links to our homes, and the stories of our people and families.

Here on the lands of the Yuggera, Juggera and Turrubal people, we created a mob here at the Brisbane Lions.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we gather here today and pay respects to their elders past and present. We extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today.

Sir Doug Nicholls is recognised as one of our Club's greats with his contribution to the Fitzroy Football Club and society more broadly.

The annual Sir Doug Nicholls Round, formerly known as AFL Indigenous Round, sees the AFL community celebrate and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their contribution to Australian Football. Each year the Brisbane Lions commemorate this round with an Indigenous guernsey designed by local artists and current/past players. These guernseys are worn during the AFL seasons Sir Doug Nicholls Round as well as the AFLW Indigenous Round.

Brisbane Lions premiership players Des Headland and Ash McGrath have teamed up once again, this time to proudly design the Club’s 2023 Sir Doug Nicholls Round guernsey.

Painted by Kevin Bynder, it represents the stories of each player and their families, the guernsey itself is a tale of two halves – which is signified by the initials DJH (Des James Headland) on the left side and CHM (Cliff Henry McGrath) on the right side. Read the full story here.

Both guernseys will be available in a full range of both kids (2-14) and adults (S-7XL) through the Lions Shop. In an AFL first, the Lions will also offer a very limited amount of Sir Doug Nicholls Round polo exclusively sold by the Lions Shop, in a full range of men’s and women’s sizes.

Match-worn guernsey auctions will also take place, as with previous years, the home match-worn guernsey will open Thursday 18 May at 6pm and close 7:30pm Wednesday 24 May.

While the clash match-worn guernsey opens on Thursday 25 May at 6pm before closing at 7:30pm on Wednesday 31 May.
