The Brisbane Lions Reserves side backed up their Round 4 thrashing of Southport with a commanding six-goal win over Redland at Victoria Point Oval last Sunday.

Reserves Coach Nathan Clarke said his team was beginning to gather momentum and could prove a serious challenger to the rest of the NEAFL competition.

"The boys were just terrific," Clarke said.

"I was actually a bit nervous heading into the game. Redland have such a talented list and, apart from Travis Johnstone (who was out injured), they were close to full strength."

"We were playing them at their home ground and it was quite muddy and boggy in patches, so it was always going to be a good test."

"The game ebbed and flowed for most of the first half and I felt that our guys were trying to pin-point their disposal too much and trying to find the perfect option."

"But our disposal improved collectively in the second half and we ended up running away with it."

Clarke praised the efforts of a number of his players, particularly young draftee Josh Green who earned best on ground honours and now finds himself in a three-way tie for the Syd Guildford Trophy as the competitions best player.

"I thought Green was our best," Clarke said.

"He has come a long way since he first got here. His lateral movement is so good that it's almost impossible to tackle him."

"If you give him a metre, its difficult to catch the bugger. The only time he got caught all day was when he slipped in the mud."

"He got a heap of the footy in the first three quarters and used it beautifully all day."

Green had plenty of help from his Lions team-mates who also got into the action.

"Ryan Harwood was really good, and so was Sam Sheldon and James Hawksley," he said.

"Patty Karnezis presented well and chipped in with three goals. Aaron Cornelius booted seven goals, but still had some defensive deficiencies. But one-on-one, 'Ace' was fantastic."

"Josh Drummond got through his second game back and had close to 30 touches. But he was probably a bit guilty of butchering the ball. I think he might be conserving himself a bit."

The match also signified the on-field return for Xavier Clarke who played his first game since undergoing knee surgery during the pre-season.

"Xavier was terrific and actually ended up playing 80 minutes - which was 70% of game time - and covered nearly 10km."

"He definitely caught the eye of the Senior Coach and showed that with a couple of weeks under his belt, he'll be a senior footballer again."

While the senior team prepares for its first local QClash against the Gold Coast SUNS, the Reserves will play a local derby of its own against the SUNS Reserves on Saturday afternoon at Southport.

"They are going pretty well and will have a few extra listed senior players than us, but we probably have the bigger bodies, so it should be a great clash," Clarke said.

"We're starting to shape as a reasonable outfit and might shape the competition."

"Bart McCulloch will also be back this week so we should be pretty healthy in the twos."
