The Lions’ new draftees have each been allocated guernsey numbers for Season 2009.
The Club’s first round selection Daniel Rich opted for the number 10 guernsey vacated by Matthew Moody’s departure.
Rich is already familiar with the number having worn it while representing Western Australia in the U18 National Championships.
300-gamer and triple premiership player Marcus Ashcroft is the Club’s most decorated player to have donned the number 10 while former Fitzroy full-back and current Lions Director Laurie Serafini also wore the guernsey in 140 matches with the Club.
South Australian draftee Jack Redden will wear number 30 which was most recently worn by home-grown premiership player Robert Copeland in 143 matches.
Copeland featured in more games than any other player at the Club in that particular guernsey ahead of Fitzroy greats Horrie Dawson (140 games) and Don Furness (136 games).
The number 18 guernsey vacated by the Club’s trading of Anthony Corrie has been allocated to West Australian recruit Todd Banfield.
Banfield chose the number which has previously been worn by the likes of Fitzroy Team of the Century member Frank Curcio (249 games) and Fitzroy’s John Blakey (131 games).
Lions Player Welfare Manager Craig Lambert also wore the number 18 in close to 100 matches with the Club.
Arguably the most significant guernsey allocation for 2009 was saved for Tasmanian key position prospect Aaron Conelius who chose the Club’s famous number 44.
Cornelius’ new number has been worn by two of the Club’s all-time greats in Nigel Lappin (279 games) and Richard Osborne (187 games).
Club Champion, All-Australian and triple premiership player Lappin took great pride in wearing the number 44 guernsey with for the past 15 seasons before announcing his retirement at the end of 2008.
Tasmanian ruckman Bart McCulloch opted for the number 25 guernsey previously worn by Wayde Mills.
Interestingly, no player in the history of Fitzroy, the Bears and the Lions has reached 100 Club games in that particular number.
While it has been worn by the likes of Eddie Hart, Andrew Bews and Matthew Campbell, McCulloch can create Club history should he play 100 matches in the number 25 with the Lions throughout his AFL career.
The Club’s final selection at the 2008 NAB AFL Draft Kieran King will wear the number 13 guernsey which was most recently worn for the past two seasons by delisted Chris Schmidt.
Fitzroy’s Kevin Wright holds the Club record for most matches in the number 13 guernsey with 140.
However, the number is probably best known as the one worn by former Fitzroy Best & Fairest Martin Pike in the Lions’ hat-trick of premierships from 2001-2003.
Meanwhile, pre-Season draftee Tom Rockliff will don the number 38 guernsey next season while new rookies Daniel Murray and Adam Spackman will wear numbers 43 and 46 respectively.
