Brisbane Lions Captain Breanna Koenen has said that her squad has been keeping a positive outlook in the face of what has been a challenging start to their 2022 AFLW campaign.
Despite a number of players entering the AFL Health and Safety Protocol last week forcing the postponement of the Round 2 match, Koenen said that mood among the squad has been upbeat.
“To be honest, the attitude among the squad has been really positive, even though it’s been obviously quite challenging,” Koenen said.
“The priority has been the health of all our players and trying to get everyone back fit and ready to play.”
With the side known for the team-first philosophy on the field, Koenen said that she wasn’t surprised to see it translate off the field too, with players rallying together over the past week to support on another.
“The whole squad has really stepped up and gotten the most out of our sessions and they’ve really gotten around the girls that are in isolation as well.”
“It’s been a hard week but we’ve all really rallied behind each other and have been helping each other out with food and board game [deliveries] and that sort of stuff to the girls in insolation.”
“The mindset of the girls is to just control the controllables, and once we get out obviously work hard to get fit and ready to play our next opposition.”
Looking ahead to the remainder of the AFLW season, Koenen just simply can’t wait for the whole team to be playing footy together again.
“I cannot wait to just be able to play,”
“It just gives you a new perspective and you feel grateful for being with the group again.”
