The Brisbane Lions today released the list of players nominated as part of the AFL’s Playing List Guidelines.
These additional players may be used by Clubs under the AFL Playing List Guidelines when they are significantly impacted by AFL Health and Safety Protocols.
The Guidelines provide Clubs with the flexibility to navigate the ongoing risk of COVID-19, while also maintaining the integrity of the competition.
AFL General Manager Football Brad Scott said the protocols have been introduced as a risk mitigation measure and will only be implemented if the circumstances required.
“In a national sport, played across many states and territories, we need to be able to adapt, and adapt quickly to the COVID-19 conditions at any one time at locations where home teams are based, or away teams are travelling to. These guidelines help us achieve that while providing potential opportunities for talented players plying their craft in state league competitions to play football at the elite level.

Brisbane Lions List Manager, Dom Ambrogio was charged with meeting the Club’s assigned VFL Clubs and is pleased with the final list of talent we’ve secured access to, should we need.
“We’ve looked to select players that we feel would be able to play an immediate role and provide us positional coverage in the event a portion of our team were affected by AFL Covid Health and Safety Protocols,” Ambrogio said.
“In addition to our own VFL squad, it’s been a pleasure working with both Port Melbourne and Coburg Football Clubs as we navigate these new guidelines together.
“Selecting only four players from each Victorian-based club was a difficult exercise as there is some great talent at both clubs.”
Key Information
- Players on the Covid Contingency List can only be used in the event a Club has 28 or less players available to be picked for a match due to AFL Health and Safety Protocols.
- Top-up players from Victorian Clubs can only be used in the Brisbane Lions AFL team, and not in the VFL team.
- Top-up players from Victorian Clubs can only be used one for one in instances where the Club has been impacted by AFL Health And Safety Protocols only, and not to replace injured players.
