The Brisbane Lions (11.13.79) were lucky to escape a late come back from Redlands (9.14.68) in the fourth quarter winning their first match of the season by 11 points.
After suffering an 8-point-loss to the Southport Sharks in round one, the Brisbane Lions were looking for their first win of their 2015 NEAFL campaign.
Redlands dominated at the start of the first quarter kicking the first two goals of the match but the Lions found their feet and kicked the last six for the quarter.
From the moment the whistle was blown, it was a very physical from both teams; with having minor niggles during the match and resulted with Jonah Licht coming off late in the quarter after a minor head clash.
The second quarter saw the Lions continue their dominance but Redlands worked their way back into the game with goals from Bain, Saunders and Smith.
Redlands turned the ball over too much in the quarter stopping them from gaining momentum going forward.
The highlight of the second quarter came from Brisbane Lions utility Luke McGuane, who took a specular mark which was topped off by the goal.
It was a lack-luster third quarter from both teams but Redlands mounted their fight back kicking two behinds and two goals, but the Lions failed to extend their lead, kicking fours behinds and just one goal.
The final quarter saw a late come back from Redlands getting within two goals of Lions, who were only able to kick one goal all quarter.
Matt Thomson was the stand out player from Redlands in the match scoring two goals and one behind and finishing with 21 disposals and seven marks.
Liam Dawson dominated the midfield, giving a man of the match performance kicking two goals, two behinds, and finishing with 15 disposals and 11 marks.
The heat hindered both teams in the game this afternoon, and they both struggled to capitalise of opportunities throughout the match.
The Lions play and intercepts through the middle of the field during the first and second quarter helped them secure a win that couldn’t be capitalized on by Redlands.
Brisbane Lions coach Shane Woewodin said “It was a good hit out for both the young teams”
“The effort today was a marked improvement from last weeks game”
“We need to improve on our execution and try not to turn over the footy by foot. We will continue to work on that through the week.”
Next week, the Brisbane Lions Reserves will hope to continue their strong performance and secure another win against Ainslie at Coorparoo on Saturday.
