It was a hard-fought afternoon at GMHBA as the Brisbane Lions VFL side went down to Geelong by seven points on Friday.

Like their AFL teammates, the game was a seesawing battle with lead changes a common occurrence across the four quarters. The Lions had chances late to put their noses in front, but inaccurate set shots were all Geelong needed to secure the 4-points.

It was a fiery clash as both sides jostled for territory in the opening half. First year forward Kai Lohmann showcased his pressure game, getting under Cats defenders’ skin with his physicality around the contest. He added 2 more goals to his season tally and clunking 5 marks.

Head of Development and stand-in coach, Scott Borlace said while it wasn’t an ideal start, he was proud of the grit the team showed.

“It was a slow start, we conceded 5 goals early that gave Geelong ascendency quickly. But it was pleasing that we were able to fight our way back through our contested ball and clearance.

“Overall, our pressure wasn’t good enough and they managed to break a lot of tackles. Giving away five free kicks inside 50 was disappointing as well. But the boys continued to fight and scrap which was good.”

Midfielder Ely Smith had his best game of the season, racking up 27 disposals and four clearances.

Experienced on-baller Rhys Mathieson continued to press his case for a senior recall with 26 disposals and eight clearances.

Defender Darcy Wilmot also won plenty of the ball, racking up 22 touches as he edges closer to an AFL debut.

Young tall Kalin Lane was also impressive with 16 hit-outs, 5 marks and 15 touches as he continues to build his game, much to the delight of his coaches.

“Kalin’s professionalism and his preparation has been first class and it’s reflected in his improved performances.” Borlace said.

“He’s understanding what it takes to play professional and consistent football. To take 3 contested marks as well, that’s really exciting.”
