Small forward revelation Dayne Zorko has lauded last Saturday’s 58-point win over the Western Bulldogs as his side’s most complete performance in 24 months.
The 23-year-old was particularly pleased by the contributions of his fellow youngsters against the Dogs.
“Last week we put our best four quarters together for two years which was really good,” Zorko said.
“We’re a very young side; the average age is 22, so we know we had to step up and we’ll have to keep stepping up for the rest of the year.”
After breaking their Etihad Stadium hoodoo, defender Josh Drummond reckons the Lions have some genuine drive behind them, in the wake of an encouraging last month of football.
“We’re hungry to continue with momentum, we haven’t had that momentum for a few years,” Drummond says.
“If you can get a bit of momentum in this game you’ve got to really run with it.”
Both Drummond and Zorko cite last weekend’s inaugural Hall of Fame presentation as a large motivating factor behind the victory over the Dogs.
Zorko explains that the Lions were steeled for the clash from the season’s outset.
“The Hall of Fame was a massive event, we got told early on when it was going ahead; we really wanted to win the game, and we did.”
Drummond says the on-field performance on Hall of Fame day was about pride in the Club’s rich history.
“It was important we went down there and did the jumper proud,” Drummond says.
“Win, lose or draw we knew we had to walk off the ground and be able to look each other in the eye and walk into the function that night knowing we’d done everything that we could.”
The Hall of Fame function itself was highlighted by a poignant moment from Fitzroy legend Kevin Murray.
“Kevin Murray at the end got all the boys to stand up, and you could see how much it meant to him; a guy who’s done just about everything in football,” Drummond says.
“You could see how much it meant to him that we did the jumper proud.”
