Introducing our 2022 AFL Indigenous Guernsey.
Designed by Triple Premiership Player and Proud Eastern Arrernte Man, Darryl White, our 2022 Indigenous guernsey is a representation of both Darryl’s heritage, and the rich history of the Brisbane Lions, including the merging of the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Lions 25 years ago and a representation of it being 20 years since our triumphant Premiership win in 2002.
The design features lion and bear footprints meeting at the three home grounds: Turrbal and Yuggera, Yugambeh and Wurundjeri country (The Gabba, Carrara and Brunswick St Oval), along with the names of Indigenous AFL players and trainers who have represented the Cub with dignity and pride, including Ringo Hood, who was a trainer for Fitzroy before the merger and is one of only a handful of Indigenous trainers involved in the AFL.
White said he is looking forward to watching the players run out in the guernsey, which will be worn in each of the two weeks of Sir Doug Nicholls Round later this month.
"It was an honour to get the call up and an honour to represent my people on the guernsey for the club that I played for,” he said.
“It was a long time coming, don't get me wrong - I was a little long in the tooth about it over many years of people getting a go at it but I finally got my chance and I absolutely love it and hope everyone else does as well."
The design also includes a special nod to Darryl's father, who sadly passed away in 2002 and drove from Alice Springs to the MCG for the 2001 Grand Final to support his son and celebrate the win.
The Brisbane Lions 2022 AFL Indigenous guernsey is on sale now at the Lions Shop. Fans will also have the opportunity to bid on player won guernseys when the auction launches on Saturday 28 May.
The guernsey will form just part of the Club’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round celebrations with further information to be released in the coming days.
