The Brisbane Lions have reached the halfway mark of the 2022 season with the best win/loss record and the highest percentage at the corresponding point of any season in Brisbane history.

The 9-2 win/loss record, secured when they beat GWS at the Gabba on Saturday afternoon, betters the eight-win mark of 2002-03-04 and 2021.

And the Round 11 percentage of 139.7% is superior to 137.5% at the same point of the 2002 season, the 133.5% last year and the 130.9% in 1999.

These significant achievements came on Saturday as the Lions posted six consecutive games of 100 points-plus for the first time since 2002, and Jarrod Berry became the 76^th member of the ‘30+ Club’.

The Lions hit the halfway mark of Chris Fagan’s sixth season in charge as the highest scoring team in the competition, averaging 106.8 points per game to sit 9.3ppg ahead of Richmond, who oddly rank second in scoring but sit ninth on the ladder, and with the second-best percentage behind Melbourne (174.5%).

Conceding on average 76.5ppg, they rank sixth defensively behind Melbourne, Fremantle, StKilda, Geelong and Port Adelaide, who sit 1^st-3^rd-4^th-6^th-11^th on the ladder.

After falling short of 100 points in each of the first five rounds, the Lions have strung together six 100+ scores in a row to competition tally with Carlton and Sydney. Richmond have topped 100 points five times and the Western Bulldogs four times.

The last time the Lions had a run equal or better was in 2002, when they registered 11 scores of 100+ in a row from Round 11. This equalled the club record from Round 13 2000, with the current six-game streak now fourth best overall, also behind seven 100+ games in a row from Round 1 2000.

The current run is a far cry from Fagan’s first season as Brisbane coach in 2017, when, apart from the shortened games of the Covid 2020 season, the Lions failed to kick 100 points in a game. Since then they have had five 100+ scores in 2018, eight in 2019 and 10 in 2021.

The club record is 20 scores of 100+ in 2000 (24 games) and 2002 (25 games), with 17 in 2001 (25 games) and 15 in 2003 (26 games) and 2004 (25 games).

Berry’s career-best 33 possessions in his 96^th game against the Giants, which topped his previous best of 28 back in his 34^th game in 2018, hoists him into a club history of 30-possession games which will surprise many.

Not for aggregate 30-possession games. Simon Black (59) leads from Tom Rockliff (58), Nigel Lappin (35), Luke Power (30), Dayne Beams (27), a charging Lachie Neale (25), Dayne Zorko (25), Michael Voss (24) and Adrian Fletcher (23).

Berry’s 96-game wait for his first 30-possession games ranks him 39^th among 41 players who made their AFL debut with Brisbane. Only Power (106) and Ash McGrath (128) had to wait longer in a bottom five which also includes Hugh McCluggage (87) and Jason Akermanis (94).

Berry is the eighth current Brisbane player with at least one 30-possession game in the book. After Neale and Zorko are Daniel Rich (10), Jarryd Lyons (9), McCluggage (6), Mitch Robinson (6) and Rhys Mathieson (1).

But who was quickest to 30 possessions in a game?

Two Brisbane players have had 30 on debut – Danny Noonan, a Tasmanian midfielder who played 55 games for the Bears from 1991-93 before a knee injury ended his AFL career, had 31 possessions in his first game. And Bradd (TWO D’s) Dalziell, a West Australian who played 15 games with the Lions in 2008-09 before 28 games at West Coast, began his career with 32 possessions in 2008.

Zac O’Brien, who played only 13 games, had 30 in his fifth game in 2013), while others inside 10 games for Brisbane have been Nathan Buckley (6^th game in 1993), Rockliff (8 games in 2010), Zorko (8 games in 2012) and Tom Cutler (8 games in 2015).

Matthew Campbell, a member of the Bears’ first side in 1987, recorded his first 30+ game in his 11^th game, Craig McRae did likewise in his 11^th game in 1995 (and had only one more 30+ game in his next 184 games), and Cheynee Stiller took 12 games in 2006.

Daniel Rich was 11^th quickest in club history, reaching 30+ in his 15th game.

Among Brisbane imports, Phil Walsh, Bernie Harris and Dayne Beams had 30+ in their first game with the club, Neale, Mark Williams, Mike Richardson and Fletcher two games, and Michael McLean, Brenton Phillips and Gavin Keane three games.

Walsh and Harris had the first 30-possession games for the club, posting 31 and 30 respectively in the Bears’ first game in 1987. They were followed by Mike Richardson and Mark Williams with 31 and 30 in the second game.

For the record, Neale was 18 games at Fremantle until he had his first career 30-possession game. Robinson was 35 games at Carlton and Lyons his 58^th career game at Gold Coast after failing to reach at his first club in Adelaide.

The only Brisbane import who had 30+ on debut at their previous club was Gilbert McAdam at StKilda in 1991.

Eight Fitzroy players had 10 or more games of 30 or more possessions, headed by Lions Hall of Fame legend Garry Wilson (83) and John Murphy (59). Next best are Warwick Irwin (17), Brad Boyd (15), Paul Roos (13), Leon Harris (11), Mathew Armstrong (11) and Paul Broderick (10).

Only 10 players in AFL history have had more 30 possession games than Wilson since League records began in 1965. Sam Mitchell (121) tops the list from Robert Harvey (118), Scott Pendlebury (112), Dane Swan (108), Jack Macrae (97), Greg Williams (96), Andrew Gaff (94), Scott West (93) and Terry Wallace (90) and Matthew Boyd (84).
