The AFL’s annual round recognising and celebrating indigenous players and culture has been renamed in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls.

Sir Doug, who epitomised the spirit of reconciliation, played 54 games for Fitzroy and was a brilliant all-round athlete. The first Aboriginal person to be knighted, he also served as Governor of South Australia and was devoted to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Round 10 of the 2016 season kicks off on Friday, May 27, when the Sydney Swans host North Melbourne at the SCG. The marquee match of Sir Doug Nicholls round is the Dreamtime at the ’G clash between Essendon and Richmond on the Saturday night. The round also includes Melbourne playing Port Adelaide in Alice Springs and concludes on Sunday, May 29, when West Coast faces Gold Coast at Domain Stadium.

All 18 clubs will wear special indigenous-themed guernseys during the round.
