The Lions created history in June by being granted one of the inaugural licences for the AFL National Women’s League Season.
The Club have signed Marquee players Tayla Harris and Sabrina Frederick-Traub, along with Emma Zielke and midfielder Kaitlyn Ashmore with the Women’s Draft to take place on October 12.
Speaking at the Brisbane Lions' Club Champion event on the weekend, Women's CEO Breeanna Brock thanked the Club for making a dream for many women in Australia, a reality.
“I wanted to thank the Club and the Board for putting their heart on their sleeves and applying for a women’s license,” said Brock.
“Not every club did do that and I think it’s a really good indication of where the Brisbane Lions are heading – in being really progressive and forward thinking and innovative in giving all the girls in Queensland an opportunity to play AFL football."
Queensland has the highest participation of females playing football in the country.
“Many of you may not know that in female football Queensland is actually very strong. We’ve got the highest rate of participation in the country," Brock said.
We out-do Victoria by about 1000 participants and in 2016 we’ll see that 85000 females have played football this year. That’s a huge wave of participation coming our way.”
The Women’s All-Stars game on Saturday night on Channel 7 had an average of 746,000 viewers tuning in, peaking at 1.05 million viewers and exceeding the AFL’s expectations.
