The latest flood disaster to befall on Brisbane left the Lions searching for an alternative training venue, with the Club’s regular facility at Coorparoo being deemed ‘unplayable’.

The issue was but a minor one compared to the devastation experienced by the recent torrential downpours throughout Queensland and New South Wales.

Fortunately, the Lions were able to secure access to the Colmslie Hockey Field for a modified run-through on Tuesday morning.

“Obviously we can’t get on our normal oval at Coorparoo because it’s submerged at the moment, so we’re just waiting for that to dry out and for the weather to hold up,” Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton told LIONS TV.

“We’ve been lucky enough to come out here – the Hockey Association let us on this morning.”

Burton remained confident the temporary venue change wouldn’t greatly affect the team’s pre-season preparation.

“We’re in a de-load week at the moment. The good thing about the rain coming at this time is that we’re not missing out on any hard training,” Burton said.

“The boys had a few days off over the weekend, so we need to keep them moving.”

Burton also praised the efforts of the latest crop of Lions draftees, who he believes have impressed everyone with their fitness and commitment throughout their first AFL pre-season.

“They’re going really well,” Burton said.

“Young Marco Paparone has been a bit of a standout for a first-year player. He’s winning the time trails at the moment, so it’s good to have someone new doing that and putting the acid on the blokes behind him.”
