UPBEAT Brisbane Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger says he expects a vastly different Carlton team on Thursday night than the one the Lions belted in the NAB Cup less than a month ago.

When the teams met at Maroochydore on March 10, the Blues were on the end of a 64-point hiding, failing to score in the second half.

However, Carlton was missing at least 10 of its best 22, with Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs, Heath Scotland, Kade Simpson and Matthew Kreuzer among those rested.

With both teams coming off first round wins, Leuenberger said he was reading nothing into the pre-season result.

"We'll expect a lot more challenging encounter this week in regards to the battle with their midfielders. I saw a bit of their game [against Richmond] and they looked pretty good."

The Lions are fresh from a 41-point win over Melbourne, but have just five days to prepare for the Blues.

They will have no main training session and will have a light run on the Gabba on Wednesday.

Leuenberger said the short break would be no excuse and they would be full of confidence after the second half onslaught against the Demons.

The Lions kicked 10 goals to four after the main break to romp home.

"We've only got a couple of days before we play again and to have that upbeat feeling around the club is pretty important," he said.

"All the boys are feeling pretty good about themselves and hopefully we hit the ground running Thursday night.

"Only winning four games last year I think it was really important for us to break that trend early and hopefully we can build something from that.

"It's pretty enjoyable rocking in on Monday with a win under your belt."

The 204cm ruckman was used in a revamped forward line against Melbourne with veteran Ben Hudson doing the bulk of the rucking.

Leuenberger said he was happy to watch the former Western Bulldog strut his stuff and was hopeful of exploiting a shorter Carlton defence on Thursday.

"It was good to be up forward and watching the centre bounces and seeing 'Huddo' compete the way he was and giving our midfielders a good chance," he said.

"It gives you a bit of a lift. It's good to try and partner up and make a formidable partnership with the likes of him and Billy Longer when he gets his chance.

"I think they (the coaches) wanted a taller option down forward so I took that responsibility and that's the depth we have in the ruck now, it allows Huddo to play there and me to play forward and relieve him."
